Note:The words in red letters in the following commentary are from the 1000 names of the Devi in the Lalitha Sahasranama and their enumeration
Sri Lalitha Sahasranama celebrates the energy that
creates (lIla klrpta brahmANda maNdala 648),
sustains (rakshAkarI 317) and permeates (nijAruNa−prabhApUra− majjadbrahmANda −maNdalA 12, sarvaga
702) the entire universe. The first line refers to this universal energy’s
maternal form. Her benediction destroys all sins (kalikalmasha
nAsini 555) at the mere thought of the divine Mother.
She manifests as sarasvathI
(704), the dispeller of ignorance (ajnAna
dhvAnta dIpikA 993) the very embodiment of all knowledge (prajnAna gaNa rUpinI 574). As mahAlakshmI (210), the one born of the ocean and girdled by it (sAgaramekhalA 694) she gives boundless material
wealth (sarvArthadhAtrI 698, dhanadhAnya vivardhinI
886)
It is her energy that breathes life into Siva, Vishnu
and Brahma etc (panchapretAsanasInA 249) who are
otherwise only inert bodies. She is the tripurasundarI
(997) who is capable of mellowing
the three fires (physical, supernatural
and internal) of existence with her cool
moonlight (tApatrayAgni santa pta samAhlAdana chandrikA
357). She transforms into the energy of desire, knowledge and action (icchAsakti− jnAnasakti− kriyAsakti− svarUpiNI 658). She is enthroned on the thousand
petalled lotus chakra (sahasradala padmastA 528).
This dEvi is full of contrasts but yet a unified
whole: the fair coloured maiden (gourI 635, suklavarnA
522) is the very same dark hued fearsome goddess (mahakAlI 751). The inherently
sweet natured one (svabhAvamadhura 925) also
manifests as the ferocious chandikA (755). She
is the personification of the supreme truth, knowledge and bliss (satyagnAnAnanda rUpA
791) but is also the creator of the great illusion (mahAmAyA 215). Despite being all pervading (vyApinI 400) in her innumerable forms (vividhakArA 401), she possesses but a single face (vadanaika samanvitA 479). She has a physical (sthUla- all the nAmams from 6-50) and also subtle (sUkshmarUpiNI 467) form; she is manifest yet
unmanifest in form (vyakthAvyaktha svarUpiNI 399).
She is ancient (pUrvajA 975) and nevertheless young (bAlA 965, subhagA 761, taruNI 358, syAmAbhA 486). Let
us pray to this divine mother, the embodiment of sakthi to energise and
enlighten us during this Navaratri.
