A song to celebrate the annual car festival at Kallidaikurichi (Tirunelvely Dt) in the Sri Lakshmi Varaaha Swamy temple.
Note: Muthuswami Dheekshithar has written a song in Abhogi about this deity (Sri lakshmi varaaham bhajeham). The car fills the streets and the fervor with which the crowds shouting "ஆதிமூலா, அனாத ரக்ஷகா, pull the car is to be seen to be believed- oh! the atmosphere is charged. Unmindful of the melee, He sits atop his high perch, enjoying the spectacle, gently swaying to the chants!
Legend has it that KubEran carried this Varaahamoorthi in a water-pot (kudam) and had stopped at the Thaamraparni river for a bath, when the pot was tipped over by Agasthya in the form of a crow. The varaaha idol refused to budge and was consecrated here by KubEra (Dheekshithar says KubEra prathishtitham). This Lord has the maximum number of garuda sEvais every year as compared to any other perumaaL.
Generally most bhakthi poets ask to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. I felt that it is only through a human birth and with the human vision we can enjoy such a bliss as seeing this car festival. So we pray to to him to be born again and again. Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi says "pullaayp piRavi thara vEndum, kallaayp piRavi thara vEndum"but without human faculties, can we savor such sights?
